Beware of Visa Charges

I was going to entitle this blog “Raped Again” but hindsight told me that may be too strong for a title but I still felt like I was raped. Here is what happened. On Saturday my spouse and I talked about Christmas presents for the Family. Now our Blended Family has exploded. We have 5 children and 8 grandkids. We used to have a big Christmas dinner the week before Christmas where we had stockings for all the kids and of course gifts under the tree. Between the space the gifts took, the time in wrapping, the clean up afterwards and the lack of quality time with everyone, we decided it is time to pare down and organize the event differently. We decided to have a secret Santa for the adults as couples. We did not want to rob the grandkids of their special event so we are maintaining small gifts for them mainly clothes. Because it is getting more expensive and harder to buy for the kids, we decided on having gift certificates as well for the kids. We decided to buy prepaid Visa cards where the kids go buy whatever is important to them wherever they wanted.

Yesterday we went to Shoppers Drug Mart and we were overwhelmed by the cards we could buy. We finally found what we were looking for. We get to the cash register and decided to put the gift cards on a separate receipt. The clerk starts to enter the purchase and we realize there is a charge for each card to activate them. At that point we are in a lineup of course so we said to the clerk to continue ringing the bill up. We paid for the bill and we got back to our vehicle bewildered with the extra cost which we did not expect. Later at home, I was still steaming over the extra cost for these cards and started running the numbers in my head and then realized that not only did we pay a fee for activation but we had HST tagged on as well. Unbelievable!

Now I hate credit cards with a passion at the best of times. To me credit cards are legalized loan sharking, with theirs interest rates as high as 29.99%. Now they get are money ahead of time ((prepaid) at least 1 month or 2, maybe more before the card is used and still charge a fee. Now to be fair I am not sure if the fee is for the credit card company or the store where it is sold. I still see it as a disguised way for companies to get more money and increase their profits while the little guy gets taken advantage of. I don’t like it and feel “raped” AGAIN.
