Poor Resumes

         I have been neglectful with my Blogs once again but I have a good excuse, I have been busy. I have been working on an assignment that requires me to screen resumes, conduct telephone interviews, conduct 1st face to face interviews then recommend the best people for 2nd interviews. To put a perspective on the volumes for the purpose of this Blog, I have screened in excess of 500 resumes so far. The assignment is not finished and I will probably screen another 500 before the assignment is over.

       Here is a sampling of the most common mistakes on resumes in no order of importance:

  • Fonts are too small to read
  • Too many phone numbers
  • Email addresses are not properly named ( Unprofessional )
  • Spelling mistakes and more spelling mistakes
  • Misspelling of key information ex. Name of previous employers, schools, colleges and universities
  • Phone numbers that have been disconnected
  • Information changes done by hand
  • Too long or too short
  • Resumes addressed to the wrong employer
  • Wrong resume sent for the job
  • Sending too many resumes
  • Mailing addresses with no postal codes
  • Reasons for still living with mom/dad, brother, girlfriend, etc.
  • Begging for jobs
  • Reasons for needing a job ex. Have to feed 4 kids
  • Handwritten resumes
  • Hand written demand for an interview with no resumes
  • Incorrect dates
  • False information
  • Resumes that are too good to be true
  • Resumes with too much graphics ( Looks good on computer but when printed in black, names and phone numbers disappear )
  • Misspelled name of person or company that resume is addressed to
  • And more


      Approximately 40% of all resumes have errors as listed above. The resume is a representation of oneself. Why not take the time to do it well ?
